Jim Webb announces candidacy; would not have invaded Iraq

Accomplished author and former Virginia Senator Jim Webb, (D), posted a 2,000 email and announced his candidacy for President with a hailstorm of criticism of the policies that led to America's invasion of Iraq and use of military force in Libya, according to ABC News on Thursday. Webb, who has written several books, including one about the Vietnam War entitled, "Fields of Fire," says that he decided to run for President because America needs a "fresh approach" to solving its problems and dealing with the issues that divide people. In a political arena in which the mantra is divide and conquer, emerges Webb whose focus appears to be on uniting people and collaboratively working out solutions to problems.

Webb, also a former Secretary of the Navy and assistant defense secretary, was highly critical of the policies of the last two administrations that have led to the invasion of Iraq, the utilization of military force against Libya at the wrong time, and to the formalization of a long relationship with Iran as that country actively seeks to manufacture nuclear weapons. Webb says that had he been President when those matters came up, that those actions would not have taken place. Webb made it clear that under no circumstances would he have signed an executive order formalizing a long-term relationship with Iran so long as nuclear weapons are included in the agreement.

Webb, who currently is polling at only one percent among the other Democratic Party contenders, including Hillary Clinton, admits that his campaign is an "uphill battle." Webb has been traveling the countryside of Iowa and interacting with voters there and listening to their concerns. Despite the arduous uphill climb, Webb appears to be determined, and, as the old saying goes, "It can only go up from here."
